It’s a Saturday afternoon around lunchtime. In the UK, the COVID-19 rules have started to lift slightly, I feel low and my body feels heavy. I have aches in my calves and in my back. I’m not sure how they happened. I don’t remember exercising to excess or lifting anything heavy.
The sun is shining outside and I’m expecting a call from Naeema. She is going to give me therapy over the telephone. It’s something I’m excited and apprehensive about at the same time.
Prior to the call, Naeema has sent me an informative and caring message telling me how to prepare for the therapy. I sit on my sofa in a comfortable and relaxed position. I have a drink of water close by. The phone rings and my tummy does a little flip of excitement. This is the second time I’ve spoken to Naeema. Hearing her voice makes me light up. She is kind, engaging, honest and an amazing listener.
We have a brief chat. discuss our days and then it’s time for business (well, therapy). She asks me how I’m feeling and where I’m feeling pain. I talk her through my pains, she tells me to close my eyes and asks a few more questions about the pain. The next bit is magic. Naeema guides me gently through some past experiences. I don’t have to share these with her out loud, I simply visualise the memory’s, thoughts and feelings. Knowing I am safe and cared for as Naeema is there. Once we’ve been finished this exercises, Naeema checks in “how is the pain now?”.
This is going to sound a little bit crazy, but we did this twice, focussing on both my calves and my back, reliving and remembering different experiences and both times when Naeema asked the question, the pain had completely disappeared, my mood immediately lifted and I felt lighter. The call didn’t take up hours of my day and I hadn’t had to share what I was reliving. This was a completely uplifting experience that I am so grateful I could experience.
Naeema, thank you so much for offering me this little piece of sunshine in such an uncertain time. It shifted my day and also made me realise how much what we feel physically can be something we create psychologically.
